Lisbon, Take Two

25 Apr

The weekend in Lisbon was so good, so good.

The sunny view from the hotel’s little terrace was a lovely surprise to wake up to on Saturday.

Our hotel was small but very cute and very clean–and best of all we enjoyed made-to-order breakfast every morning.  On Saturday we ate fried eggs with toast, fresh fruit and hot chocolate and then set off for some sight seeing.

We hopped on a street car and headed to Belém to tour the Monasterio de los Jerónimos–or the Jerónimos Monastery, the monastery houses Vasco de Gama’s tomb.

After visiting the monastery we walked down to the water front to admire the view of the Puente 25 de Abril–the 25 of April Bridge–and the statue of Cristo Redentor–Christ the Redeemer.

And after a quick lunch we did something a little bit crazy, we rented a go-cart and had a real adventure exploring the historic center of Lisbon (the go-cart had some trouble with city’s steep hills, I had to get out and push, helped by friendly strangers more than once).

Post-go-cart ride I recovered with a chocolate milk and we headed the Castillo de San Jorge–the Castle of São Jorge.

We walked along the castle walls and snapped a few photos.

And we spotted a peacock outside the castle!

By 7 I was tuckered out and happy to have the Real Madrid-Barcelona soccer match as an excuse to sit down in a bar with a beer and cheer on our team.  Madrid’s victory capped off a perfect day in Lisbon!
